Thank you for taking the time to visit my little corner of the online world! I’m Emily. I’m a twenty-something teacher and I love what I do! I taught fourth grade for a couple of years before settling into fifth grade. I’ve created a lot of teaching tools to use in my own classroom over the course of the past several years. I like creating and using them, but I really enjoy sharing them.
I’m a teacher, but I’m also a wife to a wonderful husband who serves as the editor of our community’s local newspaper. We both worked for Appalachian State University’s newspaper while in college — the rest is history! We got married, bought and renovated a foreclosure (never again), and adopted two extremely spoiled but very special dogs: Boomer and Nova. We tried to train them, but the truth is: they actually ended up training us. That’s okay, though. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
A couple of years ago, at the beginning of November, I took a sick day. I called my school’s secretary to let her know about my intended absence. I thought I had pneumonia, but was instead diagnosed with leukemia. I underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and two bone marrow transplants. I spent five months in the hospital, as well as an additional two months in an apartment located within 10 minutes of Duke University’s bone marrow transplant clinic. Life after cancer isn’t perfect, but I’m in a good place. I’ve become a huge advocate for organizations like the American Cancer Society (www.relayforlife.org), National Marrow Donor Program (www.bethematch.org), and American Red Cross (www.redcross.org).
Other than that, I’m pretty predictable. I like decorating and organizing (that’s the nice way of calling myself a “neat freak”). I like jamming out on my 1970s piano (and singing, but only when I’m home alone). I like spending time outdoors, preferably walking and/or running. I like reading self-help books and sharing my thoughts and feelings with the world, every now and then. Oh, and I like chocolate. Who doesn’t like chocolate?!
I’m passionate about helping other teachers have what they need to inspire their students to be the best they can be. I take product requests, so please contact me with any and all inquires. Have a great day!
